This recent report offers some really rich data on adoption and usage rates among developed and developing countries. According to the stats the supposed high level of mobile adoption in developing countries is a bit overly optimistic. The adoption rate of Internet and Broadband is still less than 30% worldwide, but expected to reach 50% (for the former) by 2019. Mobile subscriptions for the poorest countries are expected to hit 75% by the end of 2011. See some commentary and the full report...

A good discussion here on NPR about the pros and cons of Latino & African American youth using mobile devices at a higher rate than any other ethnicities.

The Pros:
-A way to become engaged in the digital world even without a broadband connection/PC (this lack being more prevalent in lower income and minority communities)
-Experience with the latest digital tools

The Cons:
-Lack of monitoring and guidance by parents
-Lack of exposure to and expertise with online and PC-based tools...
